Competition Events

Scheduled for 21 April to 9 June 2024, the inter-district sports competitions of the 9th HKG will cover eight sports, namely athletics, badminton, 3-on-3 basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. Preliminary rounds of some of the sports competitions will begin in March 2024.

18 Districts in Hong Kong.


Eligibility Requirements for Athletes

  1. Nomination must be made by the district selection panel/working group of the district to which the participant belongs, and the participant will participate in the competition(s) on behalf of that district.
  2. Participants must be holders of valid "Hong Kong Permanent Identity Cards", or holders of valid "Hong Kong Identity Cards" who have resided in Hong Kong for 3 years or more.
    Note: Holders of "Hong Kong Identity Cards" must have records of their first entry to Hong Kong, such as One-way Permits or passports, showing their arrival in Hong Kong before March 2021 to prove that they have resided in Hong Kong for 3 years or more.
  3. Participants must reside in the respective district (proof of place of residence is required).
  4. Each athlete can participate in the selection competition of only one district and can represent only one district in the HKG.
  5. Except for athletes who have won medals in international major sporting events (the Olympic Games and the Asian Games) held two years before the current HKG (between 1 January 2022 and 31 January 2024), all other active or retired elite athletes who are eligible may enrol for the district selection of the HKG.
  6. Maximum 2 numbers of serving professional football athletes in a team are eligible to participate in the futsal competition of the HKG.
    Note: Professional athletes refer to the athletes who are employed on a contract basis by any football club/institution/company and registered as a professional player under the Football Association of Hong Kong, China online registration system【Hong Kong Football Connect】.
  7. Age requirements for participants of different competitions events:
    7.1 Athletics competitions
    • 400m, 800m, 1 500m, 100m hurdles, shot put, javelin and discus: must be aged 12 or above (born in or before 2012)
    • 110m hurdles and triple jump: must be aged 14 or above (born in or before 2010)
    • 5 000m: must be aged 16 or above (born in or before 2008)
    • Athletics events other than the above: must be aged 10 or above (born in or before 2014)

    7.2 Other sports competitions
    • 3-on-3 basketball and volleyball competitions: must be aged 12 or above (born in or before 2012)
    • Futsal competition: must be aged 15 or above (born in or before 2009)

District Athlete Selection

Starting from July 2023, 18 Districts will select the residents of their respective districts who meet the eligibility requirements mentioned above through open district athlete selection to represent their districts in the sports competitions of the 9th HKG. Those who are interested in representing their districts in the competitions are welcome to enroll.


Prizes and Scoring Methods for the Competitions

  1. Prizes will be awarded to the Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up of each competition.
  2. Each of the sports competitions will have one "Overall Champion, a 1st Runner-up and a 2nd Runner-up" and the "District with Impressive Progress" prize. The results will be obtained using the following scoring methods:
    Athletes/teams ranked top eight in the eight sports events can obtain the following scores according to their ranking:

    Other athletes/teams who successfully complete the competition 1 point each
    • If a participant/participating team is disqualified by the Organiser due to misbehaviour or fails to turn up for a competition, no point will be awarded.
    • There will be Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up for the three age groups in athletics, badminton, table tennis, tennis and swimming competitions. The score obtained by a district in a sports event is the sum of scores obtained in the three age groups. The three districts with the highest total scores will be the Overall Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up for that competition.
    • For team competitions, including 3-on-3 basketball, futsal and volleyball competitions, the three districts with the highest total scores will be the Overall Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up for that competition.
    • The "District with Impressive Progress" prize for different sports competitions will be awarded to the district that has achieved the greatest increase in the total number of points in that particular competition compared to the previous Hong Kong Games (i.e. the 7th Hong Kong Games).
    Note: Since there is only men's event for the futsal competition, the Champion of the futsal competition is the Overall Champion of the futsal competition.
  3. Prizes for the "Overall Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up of the 9th Hong Kong Games"
    The top 3 districts with the highest accumulated points from all the 8 sports competitions, namely athletics, badminton, 3-on-3 basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball will be awarded the prize. The scoring method is set out as follows:
    • The district which is the Champion (i.e. the "Overall Champion") of a sports competition will score 10 points, and the 1st to the 7th Runners-up will score 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 points respectively. The 8th to the 17th Runners-up will score 1 point.
    • The top 3 districts with the highest accumulated points from all the 8 sports competitions will be awarded the prizes for the "Overall Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up of the 9th Hong Kong Games" respectively.
    • If there are districts with the same accumulated point from all competitions, the one that holds more first places will win; and if they hold the same number of first places, the one holding more second places will win. The same method applies until the overall positions are determined. If all the results are the same, the districts concerned will be awarded the same position and presented with the same prize.
  4. The "District with the Most Gold Medals" prize
    The district that obtains the most gold medals in the 8 sports competitions will be awarded the prize. If the number of gold medals obtained is the same, the districts concerned will be awarded the same prize.
  5. The "District with the Greatest Participation" prize
    The district having the greatest actual number of athletes participating in the 8 sports competitions will be awarded the prize. (The actual number refers to the number of enrolled athletes who have turned up for the roll call in the HKG.)
  6. The "District with the Best Progress" prize
    The district with the greatest increase in accumulated point from all 8 sports competitions compared with that in the 7th HKG will be the winner of the prize. 3-on-3 basketball competition replaces the 5-on-5 basketball competition in the 9th Hong Kong Games, and the accumulated point of these two sports competitions will be taken into account in the comparison of the overall accumulated point accordingly.
  7. The "District with the Best Sportsmanship" prize
    The top 3 districts with the highest average attendances of participating athletes in all the 8 sports competitions will be awarded the prize.
  8. The "District with the Strongest Cheering Squad" prize
    The district represented by the cheering squad with the highest attendance on the competition days will be awarded the prize.
